About The Generator

The Generator is an initiative of performing arts institutions from the Eastern Netherlands and started in 2021. Starting in fall 2023, there will also be an edition in the western part of the country.

The coordination of the Generator is in the hands of Cultuur Academy.

During The Generator 2022/2023, the participants of The Generator formulated what change they want to contribute to. Below is their statement.

Program

For a year you will have the opportunity to create a new network with a combination of practice, theory and coaching and develop yourself into the business leader that lies within you. What will you do during the year?

  • You will gain work experience at a multi-year subsidized performing arts institution. Twenty days spread over the year, you will work on a (business) assignment that one of the institutions will design with you. During this traineeship you will learn all the aspects of a business leader and you will be supervised by the business leader or director of the institution where you do your traineeship. You will receive a remuneration for this traineeship (see below).
  • In addition, you will meet one day every two weeks on Wednesdays with the other participants: you will receive training on topics that match the development of you and your groupmates. The program is given by content experts, experts by experience and guest speakers and the content is formed based on demand. This gives you the opportunity to co-determine what you want to learn.
  • You will share your experiences and learn from other participants through peer review meetings.
  • You will receive individual guidance from a certified (career) coach.
  • You will gain a large network, see different performing institutions from the inside, go to inspiring performances and concerts.

Time investment, compensation and costs

  • On average you will spend (more than) one day a week on The Generator (divided over traineeship, training days, intervision, coaching, performance visits and networking). See 'practical information' for an overview of the (already planned) dates.
  • You will receive a stipend of €3,000 for your traineeship at the institution.
  • You pay € 1,800, - ex VAT for the training, intervision and coaching. You may receive reimbursement for part of the costs from tool PPO.

For whom

The Generator Oost is a track for people living and/or working in Gelderland or Overijssel with the ambition to grow as a business leader in the cultural sector.

We are looking for a diverse group who want to strengthen the business side of the cultural sector with and from each other - as well as the participating institutions. Everyone is welcome to apply. Your background, age or education play no role, what matters is your intrinsic motivation and the courage to realize your dream. Don't think too quickly: "this is not for me" (and if you think that: call Lille, see below). The program is in Dutch, so fluency in Dutch is a must.

We are looking for your unique talent where the following criteria will be considered in the selection process:

  • You are working (on a small scale) in the industry and want to take a new step in your career.
  • You have the motivation to both further develop your leadership style but also go deeper when it comes to the organizational and business side of the cultural sector.
  • You are working outside the cultural sector at (middle) management level and you want to make the transition to culture where you can bring your knowledge gained from the sector you are currently working in to the profession as a business leader.

So what?

After this program, you will have gained relevant work experience in a medium to large performing arts institution and, together with your fellow participants, you will have a better understanding of a variety of topics at play in the cultural sector (think: governance, inclusion and diversity, personnel management, change management, long-term strategies, financing). In addition, you will have more insight into your own leadership style. You will be coached by a (career) coach and mentored by a mentor from your workplace. With a new network and additional work experience and knowledge, you can take the next step in your career!
