Knowledge Session - Accessible Language

Accessibility Week will take place from October 5 through 11, 2026. On October 8, Cultuur Academy , in collaboration with the Nijmegen Self-Direction Center and the Gelderland Zuid Library, will host an informational session on accessible language. Would you like to know how to write information clearly and understandably? Then this session is for you. We’ll explore what works well and the challenges you might face in practice.

What are we going to do?

We’ll listen to people’s experiences, look at real-world examples, and—most importantly—get hands-on ourselves. After all, how do you really know if people understand your message? What happens if they don’t? And how can you communicate in a way that allows more people to participate?

For whom.

This session is of interest to anyone in the cultural sector who communicates with the public—such as marketers and program curators—as well as others who want their information, activities, and offerings to be understandable and accessible to as many people as possible.

After this informational session

• you'll better understand why clear and accessible communication is important;
• you take a more critical look at your own communication;
• you'll have a better idea of how to figure out where people are getting stuck or don't understand something;
• You'll have concrete ideas and practical tips to get started on your own.

Program

Talissa van der Weide – Oude Bennink is leading the informational session. She works on clear communication and digital accessibility and ensures that the experiences, expertise, and questions from the audience are brought together.

Sjef Kuijsters from “Huh? What do you mean?” takes you through the approach of De Eenvoudmaker: listen, understand, improve, and learn. Because before you can simplify communication, you first need to know what people actually understand and what challenges they face.

Together with Jaheed Andishmand, an expert by experience, we’re exploring how understandable and incomprehensible communication affects people in real-life situations. What actually helps? Where are the barriers? And what assumptions do we sometimes make ourselves?

We’ll then work together using real-life examples. What do we see and hear? What can we improve? And what does that mean for communication at cultural organizations?

You'll go home with new insights and practical ideas that you can apply right away in your own work.
