Young people provide fresh perspective in cultural boards
September 2024 saw the start of the Young People in Boards of Supervision and Governance training program, an initiative of Cultuur Academy in cooperation with the municipalities of Nijmegen and Arnhem. For nine months, twelve young participants worked on their knowledge of governance, finance and cultural policy, and gained practical experience in a traineeship at cultural organizations.
During the closing meeting on June 10 at Theater Het Badhuis, it became clear how valuable their contribution is. Young people bring not only a new perspective, but also up-to-date knowledge of digital developments and social trends. Their involvement strengthens the future orientation of the sector and makes boards more inclusive.
The evening was led by moderator Yusuf Aslaner and included contributions from participants, a talk by philosopher Michael Grooff, a keynote by traineeship supervisor Melvin Kolf, and an interactive case study on administrative integrity.
Participants indicated that guidance, trust and space to ask questions are essential. Together, organizations and young people learned how to truly land young board members. This marks an important step toward a cultural sector that actively involves new generations in decision-making. Read more about the training program here.
