Experience Firestart Fund: Miriam Moczko - Heimat

Miriam Moczko, singer, performer and songwriter, makes music in response to the beauty and pain she encounters in life. With her viola and minimal use of effects, she creates landscapes where her voice shows the listener the way.

Her recently released debut record 'Heimat' is a melancholic and hopeful indie-folk album about her family history and made possible with a contribution and accompaniment from the Firestart Fund.

About Heimat

With Heimat, Miriam explores her roots and in a more general sense; what does it really mean to "feel at home somewhere. The songs are inspired by feelings, memories of events, objects and places.

"Heimat" is an album about my family history and that of my parents and ancestors. About our roots, which are in the province of Upper Silesia in Poland, which was still Germany before WWII. About the trauma of this war. About the relationship with my parents who left for West Germany. Growing up with and being raised by parents whose mother tongue was different from mine."

The album was produced by LAVALU and mixed by Berlin German tone master Peter Schmidt (Peter Fox and Wallis Bird, among others). Miriam is one of the artists of De Basis in Nijmegen, the musical homebase co-founded by De Staat. She toured Europe and Australia with performances at the legendary Woodford Folk Festival as well as Paradiso, Doornroosje, Valkhof Festival and Melodica Festival in Paris.

Miriam has been influenced by singer/songwriters such as Conor Oberst, Sharon Van Etten, Aldous Harding, Sufjan Stevens, Sophie Hunger, This is the Kit and Nadia Reid.
