Experience with Groeispurt: Anna Jos Wetzel - Wax meets Flax

In “Wax meets Flax,” Anna Jos Wetzel explored how linen can be made water-repellent using natural coatings, such as beeswax. She presented the results during Dutch Design Week 2025: a sustainable alternative to synthetic water-repellent treatments. The project demonstrated that biobased materials can be both functional and environmentally friendly.

Process and Presentation

The project went according to plan: all milestones were met, and the presentation during Dutch Design Week 2025 drew a lot of interest. The project was even included in the Dutch Design Week Tips 2025 Incentive Fund. “The reactions and conversations with visitors and professionals provided me with valuable feedback and new insights,” said Anna.

Groeispurt a pillar of support

The support provided by Groeispurt crucial. “I received quick answers to my questions and good advice,” says Anna. “That allowed me to focus entirely on the research and the presentation.” The program and the application process were viewed very positively: they were accessible and clear.

New Opportunities and Recognition

Wax meets Flax opened its doors: Anna has been invited to the Material District Expo and to a discussion with fashion designer Joline Jolink about a biodegradable fashion collection. “This project has helped me grow not only artistically but also professionally; it shows how important it is to be able to develop innovative ideas with the right support.”
