Experience with NachtPulse: The Special Social Club
Through The Special Social Club, the organizers host inclusive club nights for young adults (ages 18–35) with (mild) intellectual disabilities. While going out is a given for many of their peers, the barrier to entry is often high for this group. Through their events, they create a space where participation is key: dancing, socializing, and feeling like a part of the city.
The need is great. Loneliness is common among this group, and suitable social activities are scarce. The Special Social Club breaks that pattern by organizing safe, inclusive, and fun-filled evenings.
Collaboration in the City
The organization actively collaborated with various parties in Nijmegen. For example, the event took place at Doornroosje ROC Nijmegen and Radboud University, among others, were involved in recruiting volunteers. The organization also collaborated with LVB Nijmegen and various housing and care organizations. This broad collaboration ensured strong integration into the city and helped effectively reach the target audience.
Impact and Growth
The first edition immediately made clear just how great the need is. While organizers had initially expected around 60 participants, 103 visitors and 17 volunteers ultimately showed up. The organizers saw firsthand what it means to provide a place where people feel welcome and seen. This underscores that accessible nightlife shouldn’t be a luxury, but a natural part of what the city has to offer.
The Role of NachtPulse
NachtPulse’s contribution made it possible to organize the event in a more professional manner. Thanks to the funding, we were able to choose a great venue, with a focus on safety and aesthetics. We also invested in targeted promotion, an inclusive lineup, experienced volunteers, and a low-stimulus space with appropriate amenities.

“Thanks to their support, we were able to take a real step forward in terms of quality and reach. It gave us the confidence and flexibility we needed to get it right.”
Outlook
Following this successful event, a second evening will take place on September 26. The goal is to continue growing and reach even more people. At the same time, the organizers note that rising costs pose a challenge to the event’s sustainability. Continued support therefore remains essential to firmly establish initiatives like this in the city on a long-term basis.
