Experience with NachtPulse: Daan Walder (AZOTH) - Confessions of the Dancefloor
"Confessions of the Dancefloor " by Daan Walder/(AZOTH) was one of the first projects realized with support from NachtPulse. The project explores how the nightclub can function as a space for connection, identity, and community within the queer community.
The idea for "Confessions of the Dancefloor" arose from the need for a safe space for queer people in Nijmegen. The project adapts the concept of the confessional booth to the nightlife setting: not a traditional wooden booth, but a striking neon installation where visitors can anonymously share their stories and read those of others.
We see that the club is a source of meaning for many queer people—almost like a new church.
Within the project, the club symbolizes a place where identity can be explored and where a sense of community is fostered. Whereas religious spaces have historically failed to provide a safe haven for many queer people, the nightclub can offer a space to ask questions, share experiences, and discover oneself.
The local context also plays a role. Although Nijmegen has a rich queer history, according to Walder, there is still a need for a clear gathering place for the community. AZOTH is working to create such a place. NachtPulse’s contribution made it possible to realize the installation and pay the artists involved. As a result, the project could be carried out in a sustainable manner, without being entirely dependent on volunteer work.
With NachtPulse, we were able to procure materials and pay people who we would otherwise have had to rely on as volunteers. That gave us peace of mind and breathing room.
In addition to the financial support, the guidance provided by Cultuur Academy also played Cultuur Academy role. According to Walder, the personal and approachable way they worked together gave him the feeling that they were truly contributing ideas rather than just evaluating.
