Experience with Groeispurt: Underground Theatre - View of Keizer Karel

Underground Theatre is an independent Nijmegen theater company that provides a platform for young, ambitious artists. The company, founded by Grace Vroomen-de Rooij, Aafke van Pelt and Beau Kremers, grew out of a shared passion for theater and a self-taught approach. By observing, reinterpreting and, above all, daring and doing, they have created a place where artistic freedom and experimentation take center stage.

Views of Charles V: theater about the unlucky generation

For their new production, Uitzicht op Keizer Karel, directed by Grace, the company received the Groeispurt. The performance sharply and humorously portrays the housing crisis among students and starters. Based on research, collaborations and interviews with students and starters, they try to give a voice to this "unlucky generation" and it becomes a performance made for, by and with them.

The performance follows three friends from Nijmegen who struggle with sky-high student debts, an unstable job market and unreasonable landlords. Using the mysterious Bicycle Thief as a symbol of this generation's insecurities, the play underscores the need for a stable living environment and fair opportunities for young people.

The Impact of Groeispurt

Thanks to the award from Groeispurt , Underground Theatre was finally able to realize their dream project. The financial support allowed them to take a professionalization step and fairly reward the creators they work with. This meant not only an expansion of their repertoire and portfolio, but also self-confidence and the recognition that their work matters. Groeispurt acted as an affirmation that their artistic vision has value and is worth supporting.

It builds not only our repertoire, but also our self-confidence and portfolio. In addition, it was also a sign of confidence for us that the project is actually worth supporting and encouraging and that what we make has value.

Advice to other creators

For budding creators considering a Groeispurt, Underground Theatre has an important tip: dare to do and ask! Collaborations with unexpected parties and active involvement in the Nijmegen cultural field can open many doors. Attending networking events, engaging in conversations and gaining inspiration by attending performances are essential steps in developing as a maker, according to them.

Playing dates

In April 2025, the show can still be seen in Groningen, Utrecht and Nijmegen. For the current playlist, check Underground Theatre's website.
