At our theaters, theater companies and production houses, we are committed daily to all business aspects necessary to make the artistic and social goals possible.

About The Generator

The Generator is an initiative of performing arts institutions from the eastern Netherlands and started in 2021 with Theater Oostpool, Introdans, De Nieuwe Oost / Theater a/d Rijn, PHION, Musis&Stadstheater Arnhem, Theater Sonnevanck Enschede, Stadsschouwburg & De Vereeniging Nijmegen, Zwolse Theaters and from 2022 also with Hedon Zwolle and Orpheus Apeldoorn. From autumn 2023 there will also be an edition in the west of the country.

The coordination of the Generator is in the hands of Cultuur Academy.

Networking with my fellow generators and with great institutions in a safe setting is really valuable for my next step.

Program

For a year you will have the opportunity to create a new network with a combination of practice, theory and coaching and develop yourself into the business leader that lies within you. What will you do during the year?

  • You will gain work experience at a multi-year subsidized performing arts institution. For a minimum of 20 days spread over the year, you will work on a (business) assignment that one of the institutions will design with you. During this traineeship you will learn all the aspects of a business leader and you will be supervised by the business leader of the institution where you do your traineeship. You will receive a remuneration for the traineeship (see below).
  • In addition, you will meet with the other participants one day every two weeks on Mondays: you will receive training on topics that fit the development of you and your groupmates. The program is given by content experts, experts by experience and guest speakers and the content is formed based on demand. This gives you the opportunity to co-determine what you want to learn.
  • You share your experiences with the other participants through peer review meetings.
  • You will receive individual guidance from a (career) coach.
  • Throughout the year you will gain a new network, see different performing arts institutions from the inside, go to performances full of inspiration back and forth.

Time investment, compensation and costs

  • On average you will spend (more than) one day a week on The Generator (divided over traineeship, training days, intervision, coaching, performance visits and networking). See 'practical information' for an overview of the (already planned) dates.
  • You will receive a stipend of €3,000 for your traineeship at the institution.
  • You pay €1,800 for the training, intervision and coaching. For part of the costs you may be able to get a reimbursement from tool PPO ( https://werktuigppo.nl ).

For whom

The Generator West is a track for people living or working in North Holland, South Holland or Utrecht with the ambition to grow as a business leader in the cultural sector. We are looking for your unique talent where the criteria below will be taken into account in the selection:

  • You are working (on a small scale) in the sector and you want to make a new step in your career. You have the motivation to both further develop your leadership style but also to go deeper when it comes to the organizational and business side of the cultural sector.
  • You are working outside the cultural sector at (middle) management level and you want to make the transition to culture where you can bring your knowledge gained from the sector you are currently working in to the profession as a business leader.

We are looking for a diverse group who want to strengthen the business side of the cultural sector with and from each other - as well as the participating institutions. Everyone is welcome to apply. Your background, age or education play no role, what matters is your intrinsic motivation and the courage to realize your dream. Don't think too quickly: "this is not for me" (and if you think that: call Lille, see below).

The program is in Dutch, so fluency in Dutch is a must. A maximum of 9 spots are available for the 2023/2024 edition.

I now dare to be businesslike and have an eye for relationship business - artistic

*Collaboration Likeminds

An extensive article about Likeminds, one of Generator West's partners, appeared in NRC Handelsblad on September 7, 2023. In this article, the general director is accused of transgressive behavior and the organization of tampering and major flaws in annual reporting. These accusations may raise questions about participation in The Generator WEST.

The action of the Likeminds Board of Supervisors following the publication of this article gives all Generator WEST partners confidence that this is a top priority. Read the Board of Supervisors' statement here.

Transgressive behavior cannot and should not happen. We guarantee within the trajectory of The Generator WEST to work in a safe environment and will not put any trainee at risk of insecurity in any way. This applies to all partners participating in The Generator.
