Promotion in the streets

It can be important for your initiative or project to promote in public spaces. This article tells you how to go about it.

This article is about promoting your initiative or project in public spaces. There are a lot of opportunities to do so. However, there are rules attached to making promotion. These mainly have to do with safety and the appearance of the city. After all, the whole of Arnhem should not become a kind of advertising column.

What is meant by public space?

Public space is the environment that is freely accessible to everyone in the city. Usually these are outdoor locations but it can also refer to certain government buildings that are freely accessible to anyone. Generally, public space is regulated by the government. Usually this takes place at the municipal level but the Province of Gelderland and water boards may also have a stake.

Hanging up posters or flyers

Offline promotion in the form of posters and flyers still works very well, especially in support of your online activities. However, you may not just hang posters in public spaces, such as on walls, planters, lampposts and trash cans. In Arnhem, a number of placarding sites have been set up where you can hang posters. Failure to comply with this may result in fines.

Handing out flyers and/or gimmicks

Always ask yourself if it is really necessary to hand something out on the street. Often you see that people accept it, but then do not value it and it ends up on the street or in the trash. Should you want to do it anyway, there are a few rules attached to it in Arnhem. For example, you cannot just flyer in a shopping area and you are not allowed to use a stall, car or anything else for it. Read all the rules on the website of the municipality of Arnhem.

Types of expressions in the streetscape

In Arnhem there are quite a few opportunities to promote through objects, existing or otherwise. The Municipality of Arnhem has written extensively about this on their website. Below we briefly mention the most important ones for the cultural sector. You can click on the title for more information, including how to apply.

Displays

You can find these around the poles of the trolley lines and light poles. These used to be the famous triangle signs, which are now only used for the circus. There are a total of 240 spots available and they can be booked through an outside party. That is Hoffman Outdoor Media B.V and the details can be found by clicking on this link.

Information or advertising boards

You may not just put up a sign outside to advertise. It is allowed on private property and then there are some rules regarding the size and appearance, which you can find by clicking here.

Mupis, bus shelters and small advertising pillars

In the city there are over 160 bus shelters and about 80 freestanding mupis. The latter are the freestanding columns that often contain a map. They resemble the bus shelters but without the whole bus shelter around them. You can order these through JCDecaux. You can contact them directly.

Billboards

There are six placard billboards in Arnhem, mostly along the approach roads to the city center. These are operated by JCDecaux. The municipality has an agreement with them that they can fill a part of the billboards for the promotion of events in the city. You can contact Rosa Sanders about this at 026-3773447 or evenementen@arnhem.nl. Also feel free to ask about this when applying for a permit.

Clamping wires

For example, if you would like to make use of the flags hanging above the shopping streets, please contact the Platform Binnenstad Arnhem about the possibilities.

Flagpoles

On the main roads in Arnhem and at various event venues there are flagpoles. In total there are over 120 scattered throughout the city. You can take them all or pick a few. This depends on the planning, which is managed by the municipality of Arnhem. You can contact Rosa Sanders about this at 026-3773447 or evenementen@arnhem.nl. The manufacturing of the flags is at your own expense and the hanging of the flags goes through Algemene Vlaggenhandel Nederland, based in Arnhem.

Overview document

The Municipality of Arnhem has created a comprehensive overview document in which you can find specific and practical information about event promotion in Arnhem. You can also download this document from our website.
