Organizations that can manage your copyright ensure that you receive a royalty whenever people use your work. In this article, we’ve explained how copyright management works for a number of art forms.
This article discusses organizations that can manage your copyright on your behalf. They ensure that you receive a royalty whenever people use your work. These organizations have different terms and conditions. Be sure to review them carefully and determine your legal position. This will allow you to easily weigh the pros and cons of joining. Below, we’ve outlined how copyright management works for a number of art forms.
Copyright and Cultural Heritage
Suppose you are a cultural heritage institution and you want to digitize—and thus reproduce—a collection; in that case, it is important to determine whether it is protected by copyright. This also applies, of course, if you want to distribute it via the internet, for example, and thus make it publicly available. The Knowledge Institute for Digital Culture (DEN) has established a working group on copyright and digital heritage. There you can find a wealth of information about copyright management for collections.
Visual Arts Copyright Organizations
If you are an illustrator, visual artist, graphic designer, photographer, or architect, Pictoright is the organization for you. They distribute royalties, manage individual copyrights, and are committed to protecting visual artists in the area of copyright.
Copyright Organizations for Dance and Theater
If you work in sectors related to dance and theater, there may be several organizations that manage copyrights. We’ve listed a few of them for you.
NORMA
If the performance is broadcast on television or recorded in any other way, you may be eligible to receive compensation through the NORMA Foundation.
Lira
The Lira Foundation is the place to go for writers and translators of, among other things, plays, TV movies, series, TV movies, and books.
IBVA
This organization handles copyright matters for amateur theater in the Netherlands. This means it manages the collection and distribution of royalties. It does so on behalf of a wide range of translators, publishers, agents, writers, and adapters from both the Netherlands and abroad.
Music Copyright Organizations
There are also a number of organizations that can help the music industry. The best known is BUMA/STEMRA, but we’ve added a few more below.
BUMA/STEMRA
This is a fairly well-known organization in the music industry. It handles royalty payments on behalf of all its members, who may include lyricists, composers, and music publishers. They handle these matters themselves in the Netherlands and through colleagues abroad.
Buma Junior
This is part of BUMA/STEMRA but is specifically intended for artists up to age 26. A great deal of attention is given to explaining copyright to this target group. Click here to visit the website.
Sena
This organization manages the rights of musicians and producers. Sena ensures that creators (artists, session musicians, producers) receive compensation when their music is used. This is known as “neighboring rights.”
NORMA
The NORMA Foundation is the rights organization for performing artists such as musicians, actors, and dancers. If your performance is broadcast on television, you may be eligible for compensation through NORMA.
Film Copyright Organizations
For people involved in the film industry as well, there are organizations that can collect royalties and take the lead in the area of copyright.
Vevam
If you register as a film or TV series director with Vevam, you can expect to receive compensation through them when your work is broadcast on television, for example.
SEKAM
If your work is used in film and television broadcasts abroad, you can contact SEKAM.
PAM
PAM is a collaboration between Lira, VEVAM, and NORMA. It serves as a one-stop shop for everything related to the (online) use of audiovisual media. In addition, it manages collective rights and distributes royalties to screenwriters, directors, and actors.
