Experiences with Stroomversneller: Vera Schepers, Merel Visser & Midushi Kochhar - Makers on the Move
Makers on the Move believes in the power of making. It is a new initiative in Arnhem founded by three young designers—Vera Schepers, Merel Visser, and Midushi Kochhar—that focuses on hands-on education for children.
Makers on the Move shares a common goal: to spark the imagination and teach hands-on skills to the younger generation, and in doing so, to build the future together.
Creators on the Move
"We’ll do this by using waste materials from local businesses as teaching materials. Students will experiment with these leftover materials and discover new, unique applications—and perhaps even entirely new materials. They’ll create value from something society considers worthless. In “Makers on the Move,” art, technology, and experimentation come together. These elements are used not only to foster creative thinking but also to teach students how to design their own futures."
As children—and, of course, as designers—we’ve all come into contact with making: shaping and creating the world around us. Makers on the Move aims to give every child these experiences. We’re joining the “maker movement” that’s currently underway, where passive consumption is giving way to active creation. You can influence how your world is shaped, and you don’t have to be a wealthy genius to do so. New technology and new knowledge are becoming increasingly accessible to the general public. What you do need is imagination and “how-to” know-how. We’re on a mission to put maker education on the map so that every child can experience it. In doing so, we want to give more depth to the arts and crafts/maker education that is currently often taught using straws, cups, and other disposable materials, and approach it from a different angle—namely, from the perspective of the materials themselves and a circular mindset.
"With the support of Stroomversneller , we Stroomversneller the groundwork for the first lesson using waste materials: ceramics from TCKI, the Ceramic Testing Center in the Arnhem region. TCKI has a surplus of bricks, roof tiles, and clay powder. We plan to unleash our own creativity—and that of our students—to explore the possibilities of these materials: how could this waste product be turned into a valuable lesson?"
