Learn how to communicate clearly, calmly, and with understanding, while being mindful of both the other person and your own position.
In this training, you’ll learn how to have open and honest conversations with clients, colleagues, and partners, so that collaborations run more smoothly and misunderstandings are prevented. You’ll develop skills to better understand others and ensure your own voice is heard. In addition, you’ll enhance your ability to communicate constructively, especially when dealing with difficult or complex topics. We’ll be working based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication (also known as Connective Communication ).
For whom
This training is designed for cultural professionals who frequently collaborate with others in their work: from project leaders, coordinators, and managers to staff members who regularly coordinate with teams, partners, or clients. It is for anyone who wants to deepen their communication skills and learn how to engage in open, clear, and collaborative conversations to ensure that collaboration remains smooth and effective.

Program
Session 1
You’ll be introduced to the core principles of connecting communication and apply them directly to situations from your own practice. You’ll practice techniques for breaking through barriers, restoring connection, and gaining insight into the motivations behind behavior and communication patterns.
Session 2
We’ll delve deeper into the principles covered in the first session and practice with more complex and challenging conversation scenarios. You’ll learn how to effectively apply these techniques in situations involving tension, misunderstandings, or conflicting interests.
Session 3
We’ll wrap up the training with a peer review session, during which you’ll use case studies from the group to reflect on your development and explore how you can stay connected even in difficult situations.
About the trainer
Suzan Tolsma is a communication trainer, coach, and theater artist with a background as a director and theater instructor (Maastricht Theater Academy). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and is a professional coach, having completed various training programs in Nonviolent Communication. Suzan guides personal and professional development processes with a strong focus on enjoyment, connection, and depth. In her training sessions, she creates a safe learning environment where participants feel comfortable experimenting and growing. Her theater work connects social themes with personal stories, allowing her to resonate with people and invite them into dialogue.

There’s no such thing as the perfect conversation, but you can learn to communicate clearly and in a way that fosters connection—while being mindful of both yourself and the other person.
